Makes/Serves: bottle

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Sloes
  • 0.5 pound Sugar
  • 1 pint Gin

Method

  1. Take about a pound of sloes, wash and prick the tough skin of the sloes all over with a fork and put in a large sterilised jar. You need to employ the rest of the family here for speed.
  2. Pour in half a pound of sugar and a pint of gin, seal tightly and shake well.
  3. Shake every day for at least two months.
  4. The jar needs to be in the dark to keep it a good colour so put in a cupboard you open every day or you will forget it.
  5. Strain the sloe gin through muslin into a sterilised bottle.
  6. Sloe gin is quite potent, dilute it with a lemonade or tonic water to make it less so.
